Directory traffic and ways to generate money

Hi

What kind of traffic would you realistically need to make money from a niche directory?

I have an idea based on the area in which I work. A few others already exist and they seem to be successful, but the idea I have is slightly more specialised.

I think I have a good idea of the possible ways to generate money from a directory but if someone would be so kind as to list what they believe to be the possible and best ways, I would be very grateful.

Selling featured links and sitewide footer or side bar links are a good way to generate revenue. Also, if your site is fairly new then I do not see a problem with using adsense to help generate a little extra revenue as well.

Ultimately, down the road selling links will be the best way to keep a flow of revenue.

Keep in mind it is very hard to get traffic on directory without any backing network.

I guess it depends on what you consider traffic. I have no backing network persay, but receive about 200 uniques per day and the directory is only 4 months old.

Thanks for the information guys. I am a novice to this but would just like to do it to experiment a bit; I am a believer in learning by doing. Can I just ask: What do you think is the best way to get companies into your directory?

Do you have to ask permission first?

Or, can you just add a company under the categories you have?

Sorry if the questions are obvious; I just like to be 100 percent sure before I do anything.

Create the directory, make sure you have the bugs worked out. Then, announce the launch on this forum and over at DP.

Also, make sure your directory is SEO friendly. If it is and it's a free directory, then submit it to be included in the VileSilencer list. Eventually your directory gets passed around enough to get included in other lists, so on and so forth.
