Directory Startup

I'm interested in creating my own directory but need some help to start up. I have seen directory skins about but am unsure about the coding of the directory.

Can anybody help me with this or does anybody know where I can find a guide to help me?

Thanks

Webjunkies Guide Lines to starting a directory

This forum and I get often get question on how to start a directory so I decide to write a basic guide line. There is no hard and fast “must do” and everyone that starts a directory will there own set of circumstances they must consider. I will write this article from the point of someone starting on a shoe string budget.

1) There are 2 basic types of directories general and niche and a follow of both type of directories, you must decide which way you want to go. There are pros and cons for both

a. Pros General:
i. You can accept more submissions thus adding to your content fast
ii. Wide range of advertisers
iii. Setup is faster as you can often import categories from a pre made list

b. Cons General:
i. The Managing the larger number of categories can become a hassle to manage
ii. Getting high search engine ranking will be somewhat more difficult.
iii. Some of the scripts may tend to slow as your site grows, and the some features of the admin section will take longer.

c. Pros Niche
i. Higher listings in Google are easier to achieve
ii. Often you can get more per ad
iii. Lower number of categories make management easier
iv. Easier to get a decent Page rank

d. Cons Niche
i. Takes longer to get listings
ii. Less pages indexed in Google
iii. If you are not familiar with your niche you may have to educate yourself to a degree so you can weed out the junk submissions from the good ones.

Hope this can help you!

Really good guidelines! Added to favorites. I think you should cover a few more scripts, like Powerseek for instance, just for the sake of completeness.

Great guidelines, thanks!

Regarding the Powerseek platform mentioned here ... I found it not so SEO friendly. You can control the meta tag description and keywords, however (unless they updated this in the new version) you are unable to properly control the title tags. I didn't like this fact.

In order to attempt title tags, according to their knowledge base, you can use the category name inside the title tag of the category page/template. By using a variable called %%page_title%%. The title tags would then look something like this:

'%%page_title%% at yoursite.com'

The %%page_title%% will then be replaced by the current category name.

All in all, it's a bit unfriendly for beginners, in my opinion. I didn't care for it. On the plus side they will install it on your server for you for free -- once.

A whopping $500 mistake. But that's just my 2 cents!

It is based on PHP an uses a MYSQL database, it is well worth a visit and a closer look.

Nice work with the directory there!
You might want to turn off the registration as many people submitting might not want to register before they can submit 1 site to the directory.
Keep the submission easy.
Also give a try to Phpld and indexscript as well. Both of these are very nice scripts to setup directories. Both free.
Bye and best of luck with the directory!

very important points...

most people submit their sites to many directories... if they have to register for each, they'd be in trouble... keep it easy... if you want to keep spam off, enable a spam filter like captcha (if available) or some spam filter question... these are much easier for the submitter than registration...
