I've never really understood that type of marketing approach. Perhaps if there was a chance of winning an overseas holiday it might intice me, but a 1 in 6 chance of getting a freebie would mean nothing to me. They would be better off dropping the price by 17%.

Its not really meant to be that type of marketting approach. Its simply that some time someone will submit a site, and realise at that time its free, just a bit of luck for that person.

I found out exactly what happens. Bsically, when you click submit the 4 hour free submission notice will not be there, instead will be a form indicating how to submit for free.
I think that way isnt one of "those marketing plans", as the user who submitted didnt actually know it was an offer.

Having the 4 hour free submission gives us the ability to keep up with the daily submissions and get them submitted within a reasonable period of time. With it we get almost no spam and are able to apply our editing time getting legitimate webmasters submissions submitted. If we had 24 hour free submission we would in a short time have a six month waiting period before your site was reviewed and the majority of our time would be spent dealing with spam submissions. The 4 hour free submission has worked out really well for us and the many who take advantage of it. The waiting period for a submission to be reviewed today is exactly 14 days.

I still don't understand what you are saying. If I go back and visit your submission page every couple of hours over a 24 hour period is there going to be something that will notify me that I can submit for free for the next X hours or minutes?

Or do I always have to be prepared to pay and occasionally I'll just get luck?

If the free submission is open you will see the option on the submission page. If it’s not open the option will not appear on the page and you will see the notice on the bottom of the page.

I'm obviously missing something here but don't mind me. Since it's not a marketing offer and it's just there for your convenience, I suppose it doesn't matter whether people like me understand it or not.

Bottom line for me is that I'm not going to pay anything for a directory listing anyway. Sorry - wish I could - but there's too many of you and I can't afford to give a even a modest payment to every directory.

Yes, you will find that there will be a form allowing you to submit for free, though it wont say how long of the 4 hour period is left.

JoaAnt allows you to submit for free, if you apply to be an editor and then submit your link for another editor to approve/disapprove.

I didn't eralise that skaffe did similar - I'll look at that place again (just did - good - the links aren't modified, and Google has a cache - that means some SEO potential for accepted links).

Watch out for Skaffe, though - they're putting lots of time and effort into it. It's definitely worth submitting to now while it's "quick" to get into.

Quick is an undertstatement. I submitted on January 27th and checked webalizer stats today and BAM, I'm on it.
