Directory submission to crappy directories are dead. We reached a point a few years ago where "most" directories are crappy. Now many are going offline because there is little financial gain possible if all you have is a crappy directory. Good to see this. There will be more growth in the directory industry in the future once the junk to gone, and only quality directories remain.

of course high page rank directories are best for rank high in search engine. there are three option in directories.
1: submit blog free
2:submit blog free with resiprocal links.
3:submit blog with $
Third option is best because in other 2 option. You can not index your site easily. So High rank sites are best still.

Web directory is not dead. Avoid automatic senders to web directory and do it manually to the important ones on the right niche. Building your backlinks on quality links is more important then getting 10 times more junk links.

I am seeing 100's of my competitors using such submissions and hence it would not be dead anyway as those bloggers are doing very good already.

Yes, it is but sometime I don't think that it is all true. Actually, famous SEO blog such as SEOMoz and SearchEngineLand told that Press Release and website submission is now gone. But I think that some web directory is still give value backlink. Thus, to make sure that web directories link is index by search engine.

A backlink from high quality directory will always count. Latest Google updates just punished low quality, out of the box sites. To identify if a directory is good or not you need to check for many signals, including:

Bad signals:

1. You are able to add anchor text to your link
2. The directory doesn't have search function
3. The design looks poor
4. Link exchange is required
5. The Directory doesn't have profile page for each company/site
6. The Directory accept all kind of websites/companies
7. The Directory is selling links
8. The site has a poor site architecture
9. Valid address and telephone are not required when submitting company/website
10. All pages are full with ads.

Good signals:

1. The Directory is well known and has a good reputation
2. The site has advanced search functions (especially geolocation)
3. The Directory has good rankings on SE
4. Low acceptance rate
5. The Directory has modern design and is user friendly
6. The site has a real team of editors.
7. The pages have small percentage of ads and a lot of useful content.

Everything helps. Directories generally have high PR but links are generally "nofollow". So there is benefit but not as great as you would get from dofollow links.

not necessarily dead, it does depend on the relevance of the directories you're submitting your website to... as long as your actions MAKE SENSE and LOOK NATURAL, you will be fine and it will benefit you.
