starting a niche directory

ok so one more directory will be hitting the net soon, a pay directory.

Just what everyone needs right?

Anyway, it is my first directory and need some beginner's pointers... how to get it off the ground?

Do I accept free submissions first?
Do I link build first to get some PR? (will anyone link to an empty directory?)

Is there a guide to all this?

thanks

Yeah, I'd do both of those. I would start gettinb backlinks so it gets some pagerank and then offer some free submissions. Helps get you known a little bit and it helps to start drive some traffic. While link directories aren't all about the traffic, it really helps to have a nice source of traffic to attract buyers.

Depending on how small your niche is, you may also want to spend some time manually adding quality sites to your new directory. People usually don't like to submit to empty directories, and they do like to list their sites amongst other quality sites. Best of luck with you new directory!

some people may not agree with my approach... but here goes...

if you're ultimately looking for it to be paid, i suggest you don't make it free initially... if you do that, you'll be swamped with thousands of submissions... many of which would be your potential customers... also, if the site has thousands of outbound links, each sub-category gets less attactive for submission later...

what i suggest is that you try to increase toolbar pagerank up to at least pr 5 and then open it up for paid submissions. even better if the sub-categories contain toolbar pr too. i agree that toolbar pr is only for 'fun' but it attracts customers.

good luck...

you could always delete the free ones after you start getting paid ones

These are good points but with some hard work, you can offer free submissions (with paid as well) and not get too crowded in your categories and sub-categories. You just have to spend alot of time creating cats and moving listings around and other maintenance.

For ex., take the Web Directories categories on most free (or paid for that matter) directories. WAY too crowded. Sometimes in the hundreds and new sites get placed on page 27 or something! This is because the webmasters don't take time to try to create as many unique sub-cats as possible to keep the listings per page down. Take a look at this Web Directories category on one of my sites. Problem solved, and everyone is happy. Also the paying customers are happier, since the people buying featureds all want be in just one category.

And as far as offering free listings taking away from the paid listings, I haven't found that to be the case. Most of the people that are willing to pay for a listing will still pay even when free is offered, for a faster and more guaraneteed review.

Rather than focusing on charging people, focus on making your directory valuable to visitors and website owners.

I would start with free (or add links yourself) and market it. Once you are at a point where your directory is valuable, go from there.

Don't put the cart before the horse.

My view (tasks by order):
- Make it look very good
- You fill the categories with the best sites (don’t offer free submissions)
- Set the price and open for submission with PR0
- Link build it extensively, if you get some submissions great will help you with the cost
- When it gets some PR you can also do some adwords
- And …. Promote it…. Promote it… till you drop.
“It takes around one day to setup a directory and then a lifetime to promote it… “
Cheers
