Directory Rush
Hey Guys,
Am I the only one that's noticed how many people are jumping into th edirectory business. Why is what I don't get I mean not everyone is going to be DMOZ and certainly having sites link to your site for free is an added, but opverall I don't see any long temr gains in the directory business. So can anyone tell me why everyone is rushing to make their own directories?
Thank You

It is because.. it is so.. easy to setup..
tons of free scripts.. tons of free designs.. etc. etc.
Also.. people "think" they "might" have a chance to make some money

Yea,I think they could set a new dir in 5 minutes or so..
Download the free phpld and install, then download the database of the php categories and import it,then a new dir comes

I think 70% of new directories will not make to the first year and 90% will not make it to the second year.
Running a free directory is a loot of work and no money, also I find it very hard to find value on free directories unless you buy featured links and then with the money you spend you probably get better value buying a regular link on a quality paid directory.
Also 95% of the value of a directory is promotion how people are going to do it decently without money.
The free directories that will survive, eventually will turn into paid and some will deleted the free submits to make space for paying ones because a full directory is not very good for attracting business.
Basically if you want a good link you have to pay for it, no free lunch.
And if you thinking of starting a directory make it paid form day one, the free directory model only fills the internet with crap.
That is my view.

The huge number of directories at present is not a good sign. I certainly prefer paid directories with high quality and PR pages. But these free directories with hundreds of zero PR will certainly disappear soon.

I don't have a problem with directories. If the owner is indeed going to work on the site, I am indeed interested in submitting. What I hate is wasting my time to submit, and then nothing done with the directory, especially since I submit a good number of listings to each directory.

Hi Chris,
In the end you probably get a good deal because you buy featured links, and buy it early so you get like 5 featured for 25 dollars, then only one of the five directories gets promoted and goes to the next level now 6 months later the directory charges $30 for a featured, so you had a good deal.
And like I said earlier, featured links could get same value out of free directories, if it’s not featured and you are not 100% you will stay on the first page of the category, I think it’s better to pass.
Cheers

Seems like many of the directories using a free template/script/cheap hosting are abandoned - or they get sold shortly after the first PR update all based on the revenue from the initial submissions.
