Blacklisted Directory Sites

After PR update, there are many sites which are blacklisted by Google. Does any SEO expert know how to check whether the sites is blacklisted or not?

use common sense, if a directory is PG0 and has thousands of links, chances are it's nothing good ...

I just PG5 directories use or higher your backlinks can be quite useful

Check if the websites in that directory are good or not. Because if your are putting your website link on a page where the other links are all of low quality, chances that your website will get negative value in return.

I could be wrong, but there seems to be different levels of punishment imposed by Google. Sometimes the site is simply removed from the index altogether, but on other times, it seems that the index page retains PageRank while none of its index pages have any.
  • Does a site that formerly had PageRank now have none?
  • Does only the index, but none of the internal links have PageRank?
  • Do a search on the site's name to see if it comes up.
  • There are several tools available to see how many of a site's pages are indexed by Google.

The Last PR update was too old. So its better to check DA,PA of the website and the linkback quality.

The best way is simply LOOK at the listings.

If they look spammy, if they are poorly categorised, if they are poorly edited regarding title and description.........then keep away from it.

The only tool you need is your powers of observation and a bit of common sense.

I would define being 'blacklisted' as having your site totally removed from the google index. And to check that do this simple search:
site:example.com where 'example' is the website domain you are checking on.

If there are no results returned, the website has been deindexed and is not in the google index at all - that's being blacklisted or banned.

As WDR pointed out there are varying levels of being castigated or penalized by google. There were big discussions some 2 years ago about many web directories being penalized or banned. Being penalized might be where a site doesn't show up when really obvious inquiries or searches are made, say, using it's Title tag or brand name.

A somewhat common penalty that I've seen recently with web directories is, as WDR pointed out, where the site goes from having, say, page rank 3 to pr 0 in a short time span. I suspect that google is taking away the page rank, perhaps even manually, if they are caught selling links or perhaps because they are part of a large interconnected network, or gaming the system somehow, But not something severe enough to get banned from the index.

That's about it - an seeing that a directory just takes all and sundry submissions without so much differentiating the good from the bad or making categories unique.

exactly! a little bit of common sense need to identify the directory is good for your business or not.
I'm also a directory owner and remove too much spam links from my directories per day. it's a very frustrating work however you need to do to make your site clean and spam free.

As "Snooks" said, look spammy, poorly categorised, poorly edited and so on but you also need to notice one thing that how much pending links are in the directory.

so, it's very easy to identify bad sites, just check the listings and sites your own and decide.

I submitted my site to some directories, and its visits decreased the next day. i think there are some directories which are blacklisted by google.

Better to submit site in reputed high PR directories.

Does the directory look "crappy"? Is it just a link farm? If so, don't bother. I'm personally glad to see some of the junk getting marginalized at last.

I usually submit to the top 15-20 directories that I know they are trusted and with page rank from 5-8. The rest of my back links are made manually from hard working. Manual submissions and creation of back links is best, it takes longer but it pays best.

Just go through the directory, and you should have an idea where it stands. Also do some research, and read blogs by experts you'll be directed to some great directories. They won't tell you about the bad ones (mostly) but I am sure you can judge them by their content and their PR.

Do directory submission of High PR not below.. 4 or 3 and not use mirror sites.
