Keywords certainly help and are a must when focusing in on keyword searches from SE's that bring people to your site. However, with a directory focusing on the kw "directory" is not going to be very easy. I would look at finding niche keywords that perhaps either describe your directory, or the content your directory delivers.

There are several keyword suggestion tools out there that can help you determine what may or may not work. Also, doing keyword searches on Google, MSN, Yahoo etc., to find out just how many other pages you are competing with is a good idea as well. If the keyword is too popular, ranking it high up in an SE is not going to be an easy task.

Good luck.

The keyword directory is a very hard and competitive term. I would also suggest you focus on a niche directory, for example i opened a directory just for webmasters, I used the keywords "free webmasters directory" I get great traffic from these keywords, i roughly get 4,447 visits per day.

Overall, focus on niche keywords and start small and build some quality backlinks.

The keywords I focus on are a variety of website directory related keyword phrases. I’ve done a lot of experimenting using adwords to define which generate the most traffic. Free website directory and website directory are very good and can bring a great deal of submission traffic. As for keywords for individual topics it can quite honestly take years of trial and error depending on the size of your directory to get satisfactory results.
