$500 Directory Budget : Where to Spend it?
If you had a $500 budget set aside for one time directory listing submittals, where would you spend it?
Try to use all of the budget (or as much as you can) in your response

Hard to say. I like Yahoo, but then there are a lot of good quality second tier directories.

Your directory, John's directories, and my directory would be a good start. Of course including mine screws up the math since different listings are different prices...
I also really like thisisouryear although I ahven't given them any business in a couple of years - they used to be one of the best. After that, I spend 30.00 paying someone to submit to 300 free non-recip directories.
Let's say that leaves me with 200 left in my budget. I would check directories to see which category structures give me the best link, meaning the closest to the homepage. If my category is 2 levels deep on one directory and 5 levels deep on another, I'm probably going for the 2 level deep listing. So I can't say exactly what I'd do...

I would start by getting a submitting company to use Dans SEO friendly free directory list (max 50usd).
You now have 450usd left.
I would avoid Yahoo, its an annual fee.
I would look at the second tier categories and cherry pick the categories as James mentioned above.

Directory listings aren't about direct traffic - more about link popularity.

Yep, so how long until the big three decide most directries are just link farms?

Well, you do need to skip the directories owned by people looking for quick bucks rather than working on putting together a quality resource.

For $500 I'd submit to Yahoo! and Business.com. Those are seriously trusted links.
After that, once you've got more for promotion, I'd start at the top of this list and work my way down:

These guys have the same issue as GoGuides. Your listing can easily be pushed to the second page of its category where it will be seen by far fewer people and be far less important to search engines. You're almost forced to do the 70 dollar sponsored submission and even then in a competitive category like travel you'll likely be pushed off the first page at some point (unless your site begins with an a or a b...)
It's just seems unfair to me. 2 webmasters pay the same money. One gets s real good link on the travel page. One gets a relatively crappy link on the travel/1/ page... I hate that.
