Does the number of submissions effect you?

Are you effected by the number of submissions a directory already has? DMOZ obviously has six hundred trillion sites listed. DMOZ must also carry an assload of weight with MSN and Google because I noticed my site description in the SERPS matches my DMOZ listing word for word... yet that description hasn't been on my site in ages. wierd.

Anyhow, when everyone starts a directory, they offer free submissions. What's the point? I mean I appreciate it, that's for sure, but how does this benifit the directory?

I don't really like to submit to a directory with 6 billion listings unless it has PR. I definately don't pay unless it has PR, and I also don't like to submit if there are more than 10-20 listings on one page. but these are all just my opinions. Do any of these things sway your decision?

It helps get submissions to fill empty categories so the owner/editors don't need to do a ton of work up front. Would you seriously consider paying money for a new all-paid directory that was 99% empty?

It also helps the site gain links on free directory lists.

New (PR 0) directories are usually the ones that will process submissions the fastest. If you think the site owner is going to promote the directory and keep it alive, it will get PR eventually. This does not bother me at all.

I prefer directories that list 50 listings per page versus the ones that have 10 per page and go 5 (or more) pages deep for every category.

I would if it had PR. Not because I'm crazy about PR, but because I think that it shows the owner has built up some linkage and is probably going to be around a while. I guess having a ton of submissions is somewhat akin to this.

deep linking is cool, but why would you want to have so many listings on the page with yours? It may not matter at all I guess, just curious.

How about this...

Would you be more likely to submit to a directory with a little PR (say at least pr3) and very few listings... or a directory with pr0 and a ton of listings?

which would you be more likely to pay for?

I think you misunderstood me. I would rather see a single category page with 50 listings (dmoz style) than a category spanning 5 pages with 10 listings each.

The latter format impedes usefulness of the directory for humans IMO. It is designed to encourage people to pay money for featured listings.

If you subscribe to hub/authority site or trust rank theories, I think the former structure gives more weight to the page (assuming the directory has good editorial standards) and better association of listings on the page with the category subject.

I generally don't pay for featured directory listings. I don't expect much traffic from them and if I were to pay for a link for PR purposes, I think I can get a better deal outside of directories.

Submitting to directory has 2 benefits:

1. It will give your backlinks.
2. Most search engines use the data of popular directories. Like DMOZ, most the major search engines accept its data.

Submitting to directory will not bring direct traffic.

you can use the excel sheet that put together at info.vilesilencer.com (i think it's .com). It has hundreds of pre-scanned directories.

webfinity is liked by many
I submit to all the directories that I can. I don't discriminate against PR. The small ones are a whole lot nicer then the bigger ones.
