Well, that should cut down on the "When is my site going to be listed in DMOZ??" posts.

Sure. After 5 years of "What happened to DMOZ?" posts, there should be peace and quiet.

I moved this news to it's own thread and stuck it so where someone asks about Dmoz - you can reference them to this thread.

I've been trying to get a couple of sites listed myself! Now would be a good time to stop trying.

Shocking news. Really no reason to shut it down. Can't imagine that it costs AOL much to keep it online.

On June 23, 2015, AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications for $4.4 billion, which turned it into a subsidiary.
I'm pretty sure that there is a connection somewhere.

Yeah, they'll spend billions acquiring something as useless as Yahoo, but won't spend a few thousand keeping a simple site alive. That's cost cutting, corporate style - trim where its light, not where its heavy!

I surprised that no one stepped up to buy it.

The Editors are attempting a number of plans in an effort to keep the site in operation, albeit under a different name. Discussions are taking place but things like this are not easy to organise given almost no notice. We did originally have 3 days notice but now we have until 14th March to agree on something.

A real shame.......Many people have edited in there for 19 years. I personally believe that they deserved a better ending.

Wasn't there a rumor 10 years ago about the guys from BOTW purchasing the directory?
You're right. This ending is unexpected. And doesn't seem to benefit anybody.

Surprised about this. But then so many complain that their sites aren't getting accepted I can see why. What's the point of having the directory if they don't accept anything, not even the quality sites?

My earliest sites did not get accepted. Retrospectively I can agree with that. Later on almost every one gotten in. Seems either I have gotten the hang of it or some intervention blessed my submissions.

It was the other way round for me. They accepted many I submitted between 2006 to 2009 but not any after that. It was hit or miss. I gave up on them in the end.

I cannot attest to SEO benefits these days from directories. But according to my stats, the referrrals from them have been going down to just a handful monthly.

The only reason my friends liked DMOZ is that they could brag there business was listed on there when they sold some of there business's.

I can not understand why they are not selling the directory. It could be a lucrative sales price if someone wanted to continue the project and add there own touch to it.

I guess they don't see the directory as a money maker if it was put on the market.

Great! I could never get a site listed and I tried for years. What's the point of a directory that you can't list on.
