How to become an editor

I was wondering if there were any tricks to become an editor. I have been rejected time after time and am wondering why. I think the fact that I mention anything about search marketing immediately sends up a red flag.
I have been selected as a GoGuide even though they have a panel that decides weather or not you can. What have the other 57,000 people done that I have not?
If you are a reviewing DMOZ editor please tell me what I need to do.

I have been an editor at Zeal, Joe Ant, Skaffe, the original GoGuides, WebSavvy and now Strongest Brands. My experience and expertise was not valued by the folks at DMOZ however as they rejected my application back in the day. I was too honest though. I admitted where my interests lay.

Too bad for DMOZ. I could have really helped them clean up the categories where I am a subject matter expert. I even tried once via PMs to editors who offered to help and finally with an anonymous post at the RZ. Nothing ever came of it much to the surprise of the few editors who saw the extent of the work I had done.

I gave up trying to help DMOZ after that.

No 'tricks' required.

There's lots of good advice around such as RZ's FAQ and General Advice About Becoming an Editor but it can be summarised as
  • Choose a suitable category - not too big and not too spammy.
  • Demonstrate your communications skills (which should include the ability to read the question ).
  • Demonstrate that you understand the category applied for by suggesting 2/3 appropriate new listings for it.
  • Demonstrate your integrity by giving complete and honest answers to all questions.
Please note that I didn't mention expertise in the category topic. That would be a bonus but it's not a requirement.

We don't expect perfect guidelines compliant example titles and descriptions because we can teach that (I do expect an applicant to at least try though).
We can't teach communications skills and integrity.
