Directories are not new, or just a trendy feature. They have been around but many new Internet surfers rediscovering them, or just finding their potential after many years ignoring them.

I have found that often some of the higher pagerank directories often are much harder to get into, and they are also more likely to charge for the links. I have a much better experience submitting to directories that are new. The success rate of being accepted is above 90% for me. Sure the new directories don't have pagerank yet, but many of them will over time.

I try to submit immediately after they are announced.

You get what you pay for. Spend $200 or $300 submitting to 5 or 6 top web directories, this will take you an hour or so and you will see good benefits.

You can submit forever to new directories, the vast majority of which will never be promoted or achieve any significant PR, you will see almost no benefit.

This is why only submit to the directories you see have the potential to give you what you are paying for.

People may argue, but free submission will be on the agenda of every SEO company (atleast most of them) as long as G does not start treating dirs like link farms, sparing a few in the likes of DMOZ...

Free is attractive and will always be...if you do want to start submitting..

Yes ofcourse free directory submissions are still a great way to get lots of free one way and high quality links.

Directories are definitely a source of:
1) ranking for anchor text
2) pagerank
3) traffic
Until that changes, they will continue to be important

Yes if you can just get links from directories with your anchor text it can really boost up your rankings and also your PR.

But new directories, won't provide any of those things. It's hit and miss, and 99% of new directories will amount to nothing. The explosion of directories since scripts like PHPLD have de-valued directories as a whole. It is now very easy to set up a directory, too easy for someone who may not take the project seriously.

Most new directories are no different to "Made For Adsense" sites - they are simply attempts to make easy money without adding value what-so-ever to the internet as a whole. The free ones, are pointless because how will they be promoted? They won't is the simple answer.

Most are old and established, ask any SEO company where the value in directories is. They will say in the top established directories, brand new [phpld] directories do not play a major part. 99% is batting alittle high on the %age , but i do get your point..... (Money is the answer to a point) .....

When some one gets serious theres alot more than money to the game.

Understanding your personal site/how to promote your web site/ how your web site gets buyers/knowing what makes your site tick , and moving in that direction to seperate you from other directories.
