Relation Between Internet Directories and Search Engines

Hi,

I am new to this SEO world. I want to know what are Internet Directories and Search Engines. How they are interrelated and how they help SEO. Can anybody help me please.

Web directories are a collection of websites based on categories. Directory owners don't use bots to get sites listed.

Search Engines uses bots to find relevant sites based on user searches. Search Engines also searches directories and get information from them.

That is why you want to get listed on a directory because of the link they give.

Only those big directories like DMOZ, yahoo directory, Looksmart, etc, will be worked as data source for major search engines. Though these directories will not bring you direct traffic, after submitting to them, you are indexed in those major search engines, and thus will bring your traffic from these SEs.

For those directories with PR 0-6, less search engines will use their data, and their only function is to give your a quality backlink.

I have actually been using these diretories and If I understand you correctly, all the do is give backlinks. The work involved is too much. I think I will just stick to writing articles instead. If I write a good article, I have my ideas on the internet, I have a signature that is a couple of sentences talking about me and my site, I get backlinks from ezinearticles.com, I get to be placed in rss feed that is seen all over, and I get traffic from the article directories and other sites.

before I give up on directories forever is there any reason why I should keep adding links to link directories?
