free php directory script
Hello and thank you for your time.
I would like to build a small web directory, as this will be my first directory i would prefer to use a free script so i can fumble around with it, then possibly pay later.
I have seen many free scripts but i dont know which one to choose, the basic features i would like are recip link, free link, and maybe paid link(optional). Also would like it to be static in the search engines, so it helps for seo. And able to add and delete categories.
If anyone has a working example of a site using a script that i could look at i would appreciate or, or if you could recomend and point me into the right direction.
Thank You

Good, glad you got it working.
Thanks for trying phpLD.
You might want to look around for some free phpLD templates next to spice it up a little.

Bunny that looks good to me, i would use it. DO you think you could integrate that to have a news feed in the green area and where the demo 1 logo is? That would be cool, or where the statistics are.

If you can provide code for inserting news feeds from other sides yaa sure, but are you talking about that XML orange button ?? That you see when say you go to :
http://freephpldtemplates.sbclansite...emo1/Gambling/ on the top right corner ?
And regarding your pm , please check http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showt...89#post2103789 ,
Do not worry this bunny promises you will be the first one to get the copy of it. Sorry DB will not be included but can sell the categories only db for 10$ if interested.

I put the free php link directory version on my site for now, one of the things i noticed is its search engine friendly, which is good. One small problem i saw was that there was no Meta Description Tag in the script, and if I just just put one into the header, it would be the same description for all the pages, making in not so search engine friendly.
So here is what i did, i dub this "Meta Description Clowning", Im sure its been done before but i figured it out on my own so here goes.
How the php link directory script is setup, its setup to change the description of the page when you click a new category, like when you click "art" it will show the description you wrote for "arts" category on that page. Well the same code that controls the change in description "on page" you can add to your meta description tag and it will change you description display for the search engines.
So let me break it down, out of the box if you install the script there will be no description tag. And you want a description tag, and a new one for each page, and putting a worded meta description in the header.tpl file alone will let the same description be read on all pages.
So to fix this, you go into the header.tpl file and you enter you meta description code like usual, but instead of adding any words, you simply add this piece of code: {$description}
so it looks like: <meta name="description" content="{$description}"/>
That will give you a changing description on page (as the script is already set to do) and in the meta tag which is making your directory much more seo friendly.
All I did was take the on page description changing code (which is already there in the code) and stick it in the header description tag.
The more i play around with this script the more i like it.
Easy as pie.
