Alta Vista and MSN

1. Does Alta Vista use google results within search results?

2. I noticed last week that I had quite a few referrals in my stats from MSN. Impressive!! Then yesterday, everything fell off I didn't update any pages and don't understand the changes in my stats. Anyone familiar with MSN and how they arrive at their search results?

1. No Altavista uses it's own algothorim.

2. Well MSN was using a modified inktomi database for a couple weeks on and off, with old Looksmart directory results showing up every now and then. Right now LookSmart directory results are showing up, so i guess all of those referals came from the inktomi database MSN was using.

Altavista is owned by Y! So they Y! and AV must have the same content. Y! is said to use G!, so they are not really independednt (?)

when you post on stuff that is 4 months old some stuff can change.

the Yahoo! Search index is used by AltaVista. AltaVista analyzes the database using their own unique algorithm

Yahoo! Search dumped Google as its primary search provider about 3-4 months ago.

Err sort of. They use Yahoo's search engine (which is pretty much Inktomi with a new name, right?) not directory.

MSN used to use Looksmart Directory for their main results until like January.

MSN uses a modified version of the Inktomi search product. it is a search product and not a directory.

I wouldn't sweat it that much, when I am ranking well in Google & yahoo! I don't make a lot of changes to get a higher rank in MSN or AOL, it is not worth bringing my rank down in Google & Yahoo!.

Too true. I think it was more of a question in understanding the mechanics of the math though.
