It may be possible that if Google were to try and penalize paid directories they would face a lawsuit for abuse of power. (I believe there are several class actions that have taken place on this in the past?)
My research seems to point to the masses of free directories with lots of duplicate links and content that are more likely to be the target of any blacklisting as Google try to maintain the promise of producing relevant and quality content? Which one seems the more realistic?

Why?
1. You can make millions!
2. If your submission cost $50 yearly, you need 20 000 websites who will submit and it is possible.
|
A nice story but you are forgetting one important thing. How much will this cost. The technical part (servers, scripts, etc) is decently priced at these days. But how about people. Who is going to review the websites, who is going to do all the promotion. They want to be payed.
"Botw on the 12-11-2006 total links added that day: 827". How many people do they have to pay for their work. How many websites do they reject.
I won't say you can't make a living from a good directory but it certainly is not as easy as you are pretending it to be.

I believe it. A good directory with good promotion can make some serious money for those who invest time into it. Business.com is making some good money for all the marketing they put into it.

I agree. There are too few directories out there that actually put very much effort into promotion, design, or even whether or not real surfers will ever come across their pages. With a little effort, you can have an okay directory, with a lot of effort and a lot of thought, there is a lot of money to be made. I think the number one problem with most directories is that they only concentrate on the webmaster. They don't pay much attention to the folks that actually might use the search bar. I personally believe that the search bar is what it's all about, if your directory can't drive traffic to it's patrons, then what's the point? PR? Not likely to get much of that from most directories.
Anyhow, I like your post. The nay sayers will abound, but they can keep their 9 to 5's while you and I go and create awesome directories that will actually get used. Nice post.

I can tell that you can make few investments in the beginning if you know pr5-7 places where you can add your website for free or for cheap price. After your directory will reach pr5 (at least) you can think about good investments.

Hi Sniperhiga,
Your post encourage people invest in making a directory site but you also said that google may ban paid directory in the future? Is it a contradiction in term?

I missed this one, was looking at your dress You post sums it up in a nutshell and without waffle. It is all about investing both time and money, the more you have the more you are likley to succeed, although this isn't restricted to people with money.
Time is money, and vice versa, if you put in shed loads of time and sacrifice money in the short term you can make a pretty good foundation for a long term success.

I told it and it might happen, but who knows when it gonna happened.
Remember, if you build everything right... it will be hard to ban your site.
Don't post stuff like "PR6 links for $20 only!!!! Hurry up! "

Don't just slap one together just to get a directory. Put some thought into it and make it unique. There are thousands of them out there but only a few of them are ones I would actually consider paying money to be listed in.

I'd like to hear some thoughts on what some people would consider good qualities that give a directory value. Would it be based solely on PR? Or do other factors come into play. Can a cookie cutter script directory be quality, or does the directory need to be different in every aspect. How much time do people spend looking into the promotion of the directory, and how important is promotion to those who pay to be listed? Is the look of the directory very important? Does anyone who pays to be listed ever consider the amount of traffic that a directory might produce to their site, or is it mostly based on PR?

Someone should start a blog and really try and do this. I would be curious if the top directories are making close to this they are what $100/submission and must get at least 5-10 submissions daily.
