DMOZ on Google rankings

Is DMOZ still important to Google rankings?

What do you think about google putting weight/importance on DMOZ as a factor in their rankings? Don't you think that this move is illogical - making 1 site an important factor?

Don't know about it. But when you try to search sites in Goog there are listed and not listed but showing in first page.

Get Alive Web Directory and see the results. Not DMOZ listed but became an Authority Site.

I hope DMOZ isn't, as I am finding it impossible to get into that directory.

There are two possible influences from DMOZ on Google.

One is your ranking in search results. On this DMOZ has no special influence. A link from DMOZ is worth as much as a link from any other site.

What DMOZ can do is let Google find your website. DMOZ is spidered continously by Google as it is continously changing and Google will follow links to all listed sites. Ofcourse this is exactly the same for links on any other site already indexed by Goolge. But the frequence of spidering might be different. Ofcourse as it is very popular (around 10,000 sites get suggested every day) it might take some time before a site get listed (if it gets listed from those 10,000 submissions some 8 to 9,000 will be rejected).

Overall: DMOZ does not have a special effect on Google or other search engines, atleast no effect that other websites don't have.

DMOZ is important. Google is using DMOZ data. See the footer of google directory.

Could be that dmoz its not really popular at Google anymore. And why should it be ? dmoz was not accepting submissions for a looooong time making them not comprehensive.

Google Search and Google Directory are two completely different things.
The question was about the effects on Google search

Well from what i read dmoz data is copied everywhere from directory scripts using import features so your site might get alot of backlinks however google may nail / tag these sites as duplicates and have much less link value.

Dmoz is a trusted website. So you it will increase your ranking if you have a bunch of links from trusted websites.

another advantage of being in DMOZ is that, as an open source directory, it´s syndicated by a lot of sites that show the results of the directory under their domains, giving a lot of BL to the listed sites.

Perhaps the influence of Dmoz is actually fading with the rise of multiple other sources of website quality markers

Some facts about DMOZ that people might find usefull

As mentioned above:
Getting listed in DMOZ will get your site in 100+ other copycats of DMOZ
(so there is some value to that - I have two sites listed in DMOZ)

Don't expect any traffic

The internal pages don't have that much PR (PR4-2)

Google had in some instances used the exact description from DMOZ when describing my sites on searches. That was until I advised it not to .
So google still thinks there is some value to DMOZ!

Does DMOZ ever remove sites?

I've seen some site in there that haven't been updated since the late 90's, some with broken scripts, etc.

Do their editors actually go back periodically and clean up their categories, or is a DMOZ listing for life?

I think it never happens. If we get an approval from DMOZ, its for a life-time.

> Does DMOZ ever remove sites?
Yes, we do.

> I've seen some site in there that haven't been updated since the late 90's, some with broken scripts, etc.
Not being updated on itself is not a reason for removal, if the content is still unique and valuable the site will stay listed.
Broken scripts, images, links are much more likely to be a reason for removal.

> Do their editors actually go back periodically and clean up their categories,
Yes, but because DMOZ has grown so big checking all categories very regulary is almost impossible.
But anybopdy can help us locate such sites.
You have two options
1) go to the category in DMOZ were the site is listed and use the "update listing" option to tell us something has changed on the site that needs our attention
2) go to Resource-Zone and post in the quality control section

> or is a DMOZ listing for life?
Certainly not.
