i am pretty sure that dmoz will give your pagerank a boost even though it seems pretty hard to get indexed in these days

I dont think it has the pull that it used to. Besides, if you are holding your breath to get it you will turn many colors waiting...

Dmoz does hold some strenght and if your in there it would be highly unlikely if it didn't benefit you in some way as G still use them.

A listing in the DMOZ is a Prize listing. google consider them an authority.
it can take a long time to get listed though. don't hold your breath.

A listing in DMOZ will have two effects.
1) on the PR of your site, but the effect is exactly the same as any other link from a page with the same PR will have
2) search engines will be able to find your site, but they will be able to find your site through any other link. From experience I know that DMOZ will be spidered very often, as far as I have been able to establish DMOZ is spidered daily by Google.
So for new sites (which are not indexed by Google yet) it could be an important thing to become listed in DMOZ. But because of many reasons getting listed in DMOZ fast is an exception.

The fact that people complain they can't get listed in dmoz means they must think it has power otherwise what are they trying to get listed for?

Dmoz 's attraction lies in the fact that Googles directory is tied to dmoz, to an extent

Ehh, no.
Links get pr based on the pr of the page they are on. Not based on the pr the mainpage of dmoz has. If your site is listed in a category with pr 3 they get only that small influence on their own pr.

At least in my opinion, a DMOZ submission is something I always do, but if my site never get listed I'm not going to lose any sleep about it. It's just a box to check off.

DMOZ may be imporatant, but many of the sites without being DMOZ approved are on the top rankings of GOOGLE.

We all know that Dmoz directory is one of the most popular directory today. For me, I will not depend on it alone. I will go further when it comes building links in directory submissions......

DMOZ can definitely help big time. But depending on it is a big NO NO!!
You should be able to survive with or without it.

You can survive without having your link in DMOZ.
I think its just an extra to get listed. Don't bank on DMOZ to help you, If you can get listen the cool go for it, Otherwise do not waste your time
