A directories job is to gives you links and have strong content to help subnmitters, and if you get traffic from a directory its a plus. My directory has been around for 1 1/2 years, and my site carries details on sites activity, and some of the site that submitted rankland have over 200 hits back to there site.

My site about knitting is the only one with any history. John speculated that if your site is about the mating habits of Koala bears, directories won't get you hits no matter what you do. I suspect the same holds for knitting.
I get tons of traffic from search engines, regular visitors, links from Yahoo Groups email lists, blog rings etc. None from Directories.

Im sure they have good link value and great content to submit, and if you want to get traffic you must promote, promote, promote this is not a free meal ticket. Its just like any other business you have to set aside a bubget to promote.

I am very sorry to tell you that, but my site Natural is listed on more than 6000 directories and I've got a decent traffic from them.

When submittting look for relative content on high serp sites to help get you seen if you want traffic from a directory.
Directories supply links to improve your site, but dont expect a free ride you must promote your site correctly as well.
The problems i see most sites having is going to sites like directory critic , and going on a submitting rampage without even checking to see what they are submitting too.(If its even relative to theyre link)
Dont blaim the directory, blame the webmaster as far as the traffics concerned, and are they doing what it takes to run their site propperly to be seen, and be productive.
I quess what im trying to say is a directories only as strong as the site that submits to it.

No not really, searchmonster.org provides a few hits a day, but other than that, no, unfortunately directories don't work for traffic. People just don't use directories to find stuff, most are just to spammy.

sniperhiga i dont know about how much traffic i get from other directories, but i do pay attiontion to what i send to other web sites.
I was looking at rankland the other day under shopping than i looked up classifieds, and saw a sponcored link called (beatyourprice.com )this site i looked up under the details on his link, and he recieved 300 hits back to his site.
Seeing that rankland.com is only 1yr1/2 old we gave this classified alot of traffic.

Directories are used for quality links in the searches, traffic is given through promotion, blogs so on and so forth. I already know from looking through my directory that web directories give good traffic as well.
Its really up to the site submitting to do the propper research to find the directory that is doing what they want from a directory, and if thats traffic than consentrate on submitting to that type of directory. Find out if this directory is sending traffic in his site before submitting to a directory, and if your not doing this you really dont have any reason for complaning.

Don't think of links in Web directories as you would keyword ads on google where you'd expect a certain click through rate.
Think of them as magazine ads. The more someone sees your ads in the magazines they CHOOSE to read (like categories they CHOOSE to visit) the more likely they are to consider your business a player and credible business. Granted many of the people seeing your "ad" are going to be competitors and other players in the industry, but there will also be potential - suppliers, manufacturers, partners, employees, and acquirers.
They're affordable compared to magazine and other print media and they far easier to create.
Bottom line: A Web directory campaign should be part of any marketing campaign. Whether you should limit it to the top 20 directories or the top 100 depends....

I've got some hits from BOTW.org. If you've got backlinks from directories and these directories are high in serps, or pr, it means people are visiting them. If you don't have a good traffic from these high directories, perhaps you should work more on descriptions and titles to attract the visitors.
Directories are not a magic wand
