The performance of a directory will be very hard to measure. You won't get much traffic and the boost you get for the strong link in Google will be difficult to determine due to the complex SE algorithms. However there are factors that can help you choose a solid directory, here is a good ranking. Personaly speaking I would avoid the Starting Point Directory as there seems to be some problem with this directory getting indexed.

I have been trying to advertise on the critics front page for some time, but to no avail. They keep getting picked off before I know about it!
