I would agree 95% of the time, but where I use AdSense there is no
viable alternative, unless you have any suggestions?

If you get good traffic, sell advertising directly to the advertisers.

Yes, but the pages I put my AdSense on are just pulled from a database.
The same snippet of AdSense code is added to 25,000 + pages.
What else other than AdSense could be used in this way?
The advertisers who pay get something else and I do sell advertising direct
to them.
I agree with you, that AdSense isn't great most of the time, but for the way
I am using it there are little, if any alternatives.

If I did that, how could I get the banner to match with the content of the
pages ? The same .asp page is used to create the pages, but the content for
each page is pulled from the database.
Google is usualy prety good at matching the Adsense with the content pulled
from the database, I know of no other thing that does it as well.

Create an include that varies the banner according to the top category. How easy this is to do will depend on your script, I suppose. So talk to your developer, or request a mod.
That way, you could sell targeted banners. Although perhaps they wouldn't be as specific as Adsense, you wouldn't get any of the accidental mis-targeting or complete undesirables (like MFAs) that you sometimes get with Adsense.

they dont like me anyway, keep banning from me from adsense just for being me. 3 years on and I still cant get the OK from the big G.
To be honest I am not that bitter, it always looks like my competitiors that have adsense on their site dont make enough money developing sites so need a top-up of cash.
I agree from a user point of view any form of on-page advertising that is non-related to the content is really annoying and distracting form the content.

Thanks, but that really sounds like just looking for an alternative to AdSense
just for the sake of it.
With 800+ categories and 30,000 plus individual listings it would be too much
work, especialy when AdSense does it all for me.
Also it would be far more obvious that they are paid for ads and people
wouldn't like seing a competitors ad on their page. At least with AdSense
I can tell them I can't control the ads on the page.

I think reasonable use of Google Adsense like putting two ads will be fine and will not devaluate your directory after all a directory accepting free listing need some source of revenue. Excessive use may harm it

i dont think adsense devalue your directory at all, yes if your directory is paid, then maybe you should not use adsense, but i do have a free directory and i receive a few hundred hits a day, uniques that is and adsense brings in anywhere from $1 a day to 3$ a day, which is not bad for the site just being there, or am i wrong? i know maybe i should charge for listings, but i guess i will once the site receives over 1k uniques a day.

I'm not suggesting you make an include for all 800, just the 10 or 20 or so top categories. So your Travel category would have a travel banner include, which also worked for Travel > Destinations > Asia, Travel > Hotels, and so on.

Google has at last realized the importance of referral programs. Now adsense has a broad selection of individual ads (text link/banners) that you can choose and display in your site. You will get commission for leads/sales. (not for clicks)
Google has realized that adsense CPC is losing popularity.
