It all boils down to the value proposition. Most new directory owners are chasing PR to entice submitters. Few are chasing hub status for their cat pages and that's what makes an authority directory that's really worth paying for IMO.

I agree it would be much better if directories concetrated on getting higher prs for there catogories.

LMAO. You agreed with something you didn't understand (or read very carefully) then.

Hub status is a recognition that a page is authoritative on it's subject matter. For a directory, it occurs when the links in a category are all tightly focused on the subject. Directories that have very general topics or a bunch of listings to unrelated sites on the same cat page will never attain hub status.

This is why you will often see one page personal sites - very niche - appear in SERPs while general directory category pages are nowhere to be found.
