You don't need to submit your site to search engines. Get some good inbound links and they (Search engine spiders) will follow those links back to your site, crawl and index it.

I agree with all the above about letting SE spiders find your site on their own - submissions are so 1999

For completeness, a very good blog that talks about alternative search engines is AltSearchEngines (no it's not mine).
