Off the wall question on directories
1. Can anyone provide examples of a site (ecommerce or other) that uses a paid/reciprocal directory in place of just a "links" page? (i.e www.My Website .com/directory.html )

2. Can Google punish the main url is you have a directory running in a subfolder (i.e www.anywebsite.com/directory.html ) assuming that Matt Cutts and google do not like the pay for a link idea.

3. Anyone have any thoughts on doing this positave or negative that we should entertain before doing this?
