Don't hate me for this but here's a different perspective.

I think it may have something to do with the business model of the directory.

If a directory is set up mainly to inflate search engines, then search engines may not appreciate it.

If a directory has other features or stuff and has a different business model then that could be an asset there.

U know what I'm saying.

Look at alibaba, business.com, manufacturers.com.tw, businessnation.com ...................

I just did, I prefer to create stuff people like and link to rather than spamming for backlinks. it`s a lot easier too and obviously the road less taken when it comes to what members of webmaster forums prefer doing.

LOL if you expect running a business like that my friend you will never sell anything. When you own an e-commerce you must promote you business or you close the doors.

The only way Google want you to go is for Adwords.

For info: Google made 1.4 billions last year, and this year they made around 3 billions. They don't want any links/advertising small business competitors like directories.

Tell me why Bizrate, Epinions, shopping.com, Shopzilla, Nextag, Calibex, etc.. are not penalized by Google, they are just links farm, link resellers, PPC links and high PR (I am wondering why) etc...

They bring nothing to customers, and you must pay more for the products than the online store itself. They are just paid advertising like directories !

Ofcource Everyone want to create the content which people like link to .. But with out promoting your business via some other plateforms(Google,yahoo & blah blah) You can't achieve your goal ..
