Of course it was!. I can't beleive that so many fools got sucked in by it. You only have to look at his track record to see that.
"The facts always get in the way of a good story"
Shoemoney's site was banned permanently banned from DMOZ in 2005 for offering bribes. It was accidently listed for a couple of weeks recently due to an error. It was then removed.
Any editor can go and check the URL history and note the dates that certain events happened and then compare them to Shoemoney's timelines --- the facts speak for themselves.

Most of what ShoeMoney writes is link bait. If it was posted that he was dead, I wouldn't believe it. If it was posted that... well, anything, I wouldn't believe it.

But look at the 1000's and 1000's of people who believed him (or fell for his scheme); all the forum threads that believed him; and all the links and traffic he got for his site.

He is a splendid success. ShoeMoney's mantra - Fake it till you make it - is smart, too. And for traffic, you can't beat link baiting.

At least people are more sensible here - I notice on a couple of other forums, the vitriole that got spat at people who said what I said above. No one wanted to think that he was not being truthful.

I'm always amazed at his success. Everything seems very easy for him, his stories often made rethink if I should make websites at all.

lol. 24 posts and a very good rep count. I guess it's another way of receiving traffic though and I would also agree that link baiting is very good for traffic.

What are the legalities of posting a lie about a third party?

I can say that you are devilishly handsome. Could be a lie, no ill consequences for you, no harm done. You can't do diddly unless harm is done.
I can say that you are a jackass. It's insult, and shows contempt. But it doesn't include a concrete lie that does harm. Insults are fine, legally, in the US.
I can say that you are a convicted drug dealer, and if that is incorrect, and if it harms you (lost business, etc) then you can seek remedy in the form of suing for slander.
Lie + Harm = Slander.
Harm without lie = Not slander.
Lie without Harm = Also not slander.
Why do you ask?

Thanks for the reply John.
I was wondering because I was unsure about the legalities of it... seems to me that if you defame a persons or an institutions character and you profit from it, I would think that, that person or company has a case. Now if what you say about that person or institution is true, then there is no case...
This doesnt mean that im now going on a link bait rampage based on lies and deception, but I just wanted to know what were the legal consequences...
Thanks again John.

Let's say you just started a company. You are in fact poor. You have no money, live in your mother's basement, and eat pancakes without benefit of syrup 7 days a week.
Now you are invited to Huge Ass Big Money Inc to do a presentation. If you secure the contract you will be a millionaire.
Do you go in, honestly, in your blue jeans and ragged t-shirt? Or do you borrow money to rent a car, buy a $2,000 Hugo Boss suit, hand made silk tie, and $400 Italian leather shoes?
You present yourself as a success in order to become a success.

Sure thing this is....and this made me think that in order to launch a massive link bait and to make it effective, you have to be the center of attraction. This means that you have to be known in the industry and this is not just the ordinary but otherwise like shoemoney....
