now days they don't really help like they used to since google went on an all out war with directory owners for paid links etc. But it does help a little, not traffic wise though.

Actually it helps a lot.

A month ago I submitted a site to 1000 directories for a client. He was listed at position 110 in Google for a Hawaii keyword. One month later, he is sitting at position 19. The client's site had major improvements in all the search engines, including Live/MSN where his site was not in the top 500.

The key is to vary your descriptions, anchor text, etc. Do that and it will help a lot.

You are right that directory owners were hurt for selling links. Maybe a lack of sponsored, footer, etc. links is a good way to identify the better directories.

yep, and a good way to monetize a directory to earn the full amount that you should be earning, its too bad that google did that.

I don't know many directory owners that are too happy with Google. It seems Google just decided to nuke one niche for link sales. But take a look at some of the top rankings sites for Search Engine Optimization. I have seen high ranking SEO sites with backlinks from cookie (the kind you eat) pages!

There is a trick I did not understain here. It would take me days (or weeks) to submit my site to 1000 directories.

Do you do this one directories at the time???
If the answer is no (I realy hope the answer is no), how do you do this?

Newly announced directories normally accept submissions faster and some of them go on to become paid directories and acquire PR So overall it does make some sense
