Web Directory Links
When clicked should they
or
Open in same window?
Just wondering what the general concensus was and why.

Same question came to my mind when I was working on my [link removed] directory.
I think the links should be opened in the same window because people get disturbed when they click on a link and multiple windows start opening.

In general, I prefer for external links from a directory to open in a new window, but the target attribute has been deprecated in XHTML strict, so your choice of doctype can play a role in the decision too (unless you use javascript to force the link to open a new window).

I lean towards opening in a new window myself, but wanted to get how others felt on the topic.

I use same window for all my work but I personally like to open up windows in different tabs. I am not the average web user though, just as the rest of us here are not. The question is, what does the average Joe want and where do you find the average Joe on the web that would even know what this question means?

I open in other window just to make sure that I never lost any important information on the page that I'm currently reading.

If you want to create the most value for the submitting site, I think it would be to open in a new window.

Of course in a new window. You would not want your customers giving your websites hits to run away, would you?

I think its just a matter of preference. I prefer to use another window, so I set my links like that.

i think the same window is better, a new window may create some popup stops which might look bad! visitors are smart enough to hit the back switch and return to the website

Same window is much better, if a user want to open it in a new window they can always right click and select open in new window or tab.

Regardless of how other directories arelayed out, I opt ot open listings in a new window as well. Although our directory opens in the same window

I hate websites where their links open in a new window. It's very easier for a user to select a website to open in a new window, so what's the point in having it I think. May as wells have it open in the same window.

Even though you may find it annoying a new window is best
You still have your site open in the background and it greatly increases the chance that you site may get more activity. As after they have closed the window they opened they may then go and click on another link
