Most Successful Directory Launch?

I'm curious and wanted some feedback from the webmasters/directory owners here at v7n.

What do you consider a successful directory launch?
  • For those that have paid and free (initially or permanent) directories, what were your numbers (submissions) like during your first month of business?
  • Did you reach/surpass your goals?
  • Do you consider your directory a success?

Are you guys telling me that there are no serious webmasters/directory owners that visit this forum, at least that are willing to share?

If you would be willing to share I'm sure it would benefit all.

Well, launched my directory yesterday at many forums. Was a good day yesterday. Got nice comments and some submissions. Looking forward to see what happens this month.

If you announce a free directory at sites such as DP you'll get as many submissions as you can handle quite quickly - especially if your site already has PR.

I launched a new site some months ago and had several thousand submissions in a month - had to go to paid to stop any more submissions.

Be prepared for lots of crappy MFA sites being submitted and set aside plenty of time to properly go through submissions to accept / reject and reclassify them.

Also consider adding new categories as you go through submissions to ensure that you don't get too many sites in a few categories.

If you don't mind me asking, how many or what percentage of the sites you had submitted for free were totally junk?

I'm curious as to the actual quality of sites submitted when advertised in these areas.

I agree with you, I switched to paid to stop junk submissions, well it did not stop completly because some people keep going to submit and not pay, that's stupid because not only I delete the submission but I am banning the IP.

There is nothing standard when it comes to measure success.
What may be more than enough for myself it might be peanuts for you...

If you plan to start a free directory, expect at least 1000 submissions on the first month. Obviously many of these are just low quality sites so make sure you won't accept just about anyone.

If you start a paid directory the things are a bit different. You may need to have a really good site with a eye catching template in order to atract visitors and submiters. Try to make your directory to stand out from the crowd, try to offer something different

I launched a few directories by curiosity, as I am an adept of directories and consider these as YP.

I did not work seriously on them yet, because my main focus is my e-commerce, but sooner or later I will.

My web directory has been up for quite a bit now and was first started off by links in emails, forum sigs, word of mouth and friends helping out as well. However getting spam is not fun but they seem to love the Software Retailer category under Shopping > Computers (Weird!)
