There only 3 paid directories you can trust 100%. Google still count their links, index pages on a regular basis, and keep Pagerank value.
1. Yahoo Directory
2. Business.com
3. BOTW.org

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Abotw.org - 169 000 pages. That's the reason! Some pages loose Pagerank because they could be too far from homepage and other pages with good pr.
Anyway, all pages from BOTW indexed and their domain power compensate pagerank if we talk about link value.

Most directories have little PR value on the page your link will be on, and also, if that directory is a link directory then your site will be penalised. you are better off getting links from other sources

What a load of absolute rubbish! If that was true we would all be submitting our competitors to them to get them penalised! Ever wonder why we aren't doing that?

Links
Calm down, it's only a commercial !!
Google is always on the look out for directories that are essentially link farms, if your link is registered with such a site , it will get penalised, this is a fact. Matt cutts has made various comments regarding the fact that some directories are produced with the sole aim of getting links, and therefore are considered as manipulation of serps.
Birdie, Your comment about competitor sites is a valid one, and there have been instances when sites have been penalised by competitor activity.
Are you suggesting that any link from a directory is worthwhile, because if you are then your wrong.

Your website does not get penalized for being listed in a bad directory, the link simply will not be counted. It's what you link from your website that can get you penalized.

OK, maybe the wrong term here is bad directory, it is a fact that if your site has backlinks from recognised link farms or "bad neighbourhoods" as google calls them, and google thinks you are trying to manipulate your serps, it will penalise you.

More absolute rubbish!
I will type this really slow in case you have trouble understanding it...
You DO NOT get penalized of your site is linked from from a link farm, links directory or bad directory. You DO get penalized if you link to them.

Birdie, Keep the personal insults to yourself!!
Since you think i do not know what i am talking about, here is an excerpt from google itself, explaining exactly what i mean,
"Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
Links intended to manipulate PageRank
Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
This is taken from the Google webmaster central website!

Theoretically, a backlink does not hurt your site. What would hurt your site is that if you have an outgoing link (dofollow) to a bad neighborhood site.

Have actually you read what you posted? Where in that does Google say that a bad link to your site penalises you as you are claiming? The quote is about link exchanges. What you posted in a previous message was:
Quote:
|
if your link is registered with such a site , it will get penalised, this is a fact.
|
- what you said has nothing to do with what you just posted!
I say again: You have no idea what you are talking about. Have you noticed that no one is agreeing with you? Have you not wondered why we all do not spend our time submitting our competitors to those bad neighbourhoods? ....

You can argue as much as you like, but have you not noticed that NO ONE is agreeing with you. You are just plain and simply wrong and the kind of information you are posting should not be left unchallenged to confuse newbies.
Rather than argue, why do you not find us ONE link to a statement from anyone at Google or in their guidelines that a link to a site can penalise it.

Last Word
Does anyone else notice that Birdie always wants to have the last word !! I have checked his other posts on this forum, and it's a similar story...
I bet he responds to this as well, so he can have the last word....
