Rather than argue, why do you not find us ONE link to a statement from anyone at Google or in their guidelines that a link to a site can penalize it.

I agree with you 100% but unfortunately most of what Google does say is brief and left to a lot of interpretation. Incorrect rumors frequently end up interpreted as facts.

Happened to be reading another thread on this site and came across more references to what i meant by link farms,

"Today, submitting to a "Link Farm" or FFA site can be harmful to your website's reputation. Google takes a strong stance against these kinds of link pages. At best, the "Link Farm" will drag down your ranking and make it harder for the valuable sites to work in your favor. At worst, your site will be BANNED altogether for using spam sites to attempt to generate traffic. This is a very real possibility."

According to comments from several people, it is the link from your site to a link farm that is the dangerous part, or even a reciprocal link, is that what this quote means?

I agree, don't worry about the quality directories like Yahoo! that accept payment. They often reject bad or spam sites. Afterall, it would not be in the directory's interest to take your money and let your ranking not be worth the money.

While there are several directories out there that only want your money, they should be fairly easy to spot.

regarding the OP's question, I'd say no.

most of them charge extortionate prices for a cruddy link that hardly anyone will ever click. Also, most say 'no refund, no guarantee of admission', so you might end up shelling out aforementioned extortionate price for nothing...
