DMOZ?

Does anyone even use DMOZ anymore? I found in my logs 2 (yes 2) actual referals from DMOZ. I'm stunned.

0.1% of my referrals come from DMOZ or a DMOZ clone = ~ 50 visitors a month.

So, yes, as much as the DMOZ bashers hate it, a few people do use DMOZ.

I guess it all depends on the category - I have heard some webmasters claim they get none and other claim the get a lot.

Yep... I use it!

I find myself sometimes searching in obscure antique categories, which aren't always indexed well by G, Y!, et al, and in many cases DMOZ has sites I've never heard of before.

Cheers

We put a listing into their directory a good number of months ago (forum support - travel & relocation to our area) .. but never seemed to have a glimmer of success with it, don't even know if we are still listed anymore?

I personally found it really awkward to work with/navigate.

I used it last month, no seriously I really did. Every time I use them I end up finding something I haven't seen before and sometimes I even use what I find.

Yeah people still do use DMOZ and getting a backlink from DMOZ through inclusion of your site is still a big task as not all the sites can make till there. IMO DMOZ still has got some following.

it is really difficult to get into dmoz but there are immense benefits from a search engine point of view if your site is accepted by them.

you may list higher up on the search and more traffic will follow.

DMOZ do have a search function, so you can easily see if your site is listed.

It can take from a few hours to years to be reviewed, but if anyone wants to help speed up the process, then volunteer to become an editor. Pick a small category 15-75 sites including sub categories. Often its a good idea to start with your home town, then when you have learned the basics, you can apply to edit elsewhere. You will need three sites that really fit the category (your home town must have some sites there not listed) remember to pay attention to detail, spelling grammar, look at other sites in the category to see how they are described and titled. Above all tell the truth about any websites with which you are affiliated. You can get youir own site listed faster and help bring down the Qs.

In a sense it is hit and miss. But perhaps if you have a glimpse into what the directory is about it might help.

It is not a listing service, offering a site is just that, you offer it, there is no guarantee that it will be listed or when. That is because the directory seeks to build up categorized sites that will be useful to the surfer. One pool to use are submitted sites, but editors also go and search for sites to list, some editors won't use any of the submitted sites, because in some categories all we get is none unique content sites, affiliates, mirrors, get rich quick and junk and spam.

We are al;so not interested in how well the site has been constructed. Unique content is the main criteria and on guideline compliant sites.

It helps if the submitter, usually the webmaster, reads the guidelines and tries to offer a title and description which is guideline compliant. They stand out in the Q and often we will check them out first and they Qjump for possible listing.

Most guideline compliant sites with unique content will get listed, but can take from a few hours to years. Depends on who wants to edit that category. Remember we are all volunteers and do this as a hobby in our spare time, so how much we edit depends on work, family and what we feel like, if it does not feel enjoyable I don't do any that day/week/month.

I have just spent 3 weeks editing in a category that I have not edited for 8 months, others have done some, but not a lot. I have sourced new sites, dwealt with most of the sites not returning and got the Q down of submitted sites from over 200 to about 20. But when will I do that again? Depends, but certainly not making any predictions. So what at present looks like a fast moving category, may not look like that in say a years time.

What can be done? Not a lot, except that if we had more editors then we could list more sites. So how about you spending a good deal of your spare time editing in DMOZ. Ask to be an editor, pass the tests and then you too can help to bring the Q's down and stop people saying "But it can be hit and miss"

The point of this thread was about the traffic I am receiving from DMOZ when I thought no one really used it anymore...I guess it's not completely dead.

I don't have a lot hits from DMOZ but get some from clones. That's still a nice BL to have.
