Web Directories, Worth the Effort?
I was thinking about starting a web directory, but not sure if it's worth the effort. How much money did you initially make when you started your web directory? And is it a lot of work??
And what is recommended, general or niche? I was leaning more towards niche..

I think it would be better if you make it a general directory..Anyway, I don't have any idea how much will you going to earn when running that particular site but I'm pretty sure that you need to pay attention and work hard on it especially if your directory needs moderations..

It will be beneficial for you if you start from a general directory and choose good template which have all categories.

I have a different opinion.
Directories as a business model is nearly dead. if you want to be differnt, make a niche directory and approve only high quality links.

That's very interesting, alemcherry..I could try and go into a niche directory, but what, in your opinion, is a high quality link? High PR? I've always wondered about directories, can you only add links that people submit, or can you add your own that you find or know are high quality?

It depends on what directory You gonna create. There are 3 factors that fundamentally influence the directory cost - domain name, design and directory script. If You purchase a good (short and well-remembered) domain name, order quality and unique design and php script, written especially for this directory - it may cost a vast sum (more than $5.000)

Most web directories do not earn much money, but do not need a lot of work. Usually i pay hosting for 5 websites with earnings from one of my directories.
Usually directory webmaster own few directories 5 - 10 directories to maximize the profit, but it is actually not money making machine business.

For me the main reason for this is doing so called "own network" . Directories very quickly gain high PR, even with new domain.

well, most important is that you take it serious, google has become a lot better lately to filetr out the crap and then your directory wont get indexed ... like never ... so, make sure you have reall content, don't allow crap directories etc.
how most directory owners work; at first they have free submissions, this just to fill up the directory, at the same time to build links for them of course, once they have at least PR3, they change from free to paid and put a link for it in directorycritic.
as mentioned before; most directories don't make much money, but once your directory is a paid one; the work you need to do for it is minimal; just approve from time to time a paid submission
why having a directory?
well, I have one, but that was more as an experiment, as we ssell manual directory submissions, so I wanted to know the other side of the story and it helped, as I'm now aware that NOT getting rejected is much more important than getting accepted; most FREE-directory owners spend more time deleting the crap than actually approving sites, so make sure you don't get mistaken for a crap-site
anyway, you're a couple of years too late if you want to make big money from it ... but if you're happy enough with some easy money from time to time, then you could make a directory ...

I use to make real good money off it....it doesn't take much time even directories with a free template earned alot of money.
The thing is just get the pr up...and promote it on dp.
It doesn't work like that anymore... pr update and crap
not worth the time..too much damn directories out there now....
Just my 10 cents.
People buy directory link is for visitors so if your site is new or pr is 5 you seen sites like that giving free links.
They use to charge way more for a link

Nichie directories are really nice, but grow in a slower manner which make me change to a general directory on electronsonline.com as I was planning to run it as an IT directory only.
