Google and YAHOO sitemaps for web directories

There is a statement on the "Add URL" page of goguides.org directory
( http://www.goguides.org/addurl.html ) , that claims:
NOTE: We use Google and YAHOO! sitemaps to notify them of all new submissions at GoGuides.
What advanages does it have for the directory? How does it work?

WoW directory was the first to use the sitemap services for new submissions but it quickly spread to other directories. This has no major advantage for the directory; it is done for the submitter. It can be especially beneficial to the new website developer as an aid to get recognized by the search engines. There are several ways it can be done; initially at WoW we used a version of the new submissions page data.
