DMOZ is alive and well.

I recently needed to have my listing's Region changed (from San Francisco bay area to "Sacramento Valley") and the category Editor responded promptly and efficiently. The change order was implemented in less than 24 hours!

Yes, its popularity is going down fast. Thousands of rejected submissions, and it takes a year to get you listed, if you ever get. That's bad for it.

I believe DMOZ is out of control; there are way too many submissions to handle, and that's why it takes so much time for a time to get approved. Maybe that's also the reason for mass rejections?

Off course - so much crap gets suggested

Off course DMOZ is NOT a listing service. More than half the new sites listed were never submitted in the first place.

How?

Submissions are usually a low priority for editors as they are the worse sources of finding new sites that are listable. When I was an editor I ususally just ignored the submissions and went looking elsewhere for new sites to add.

You have an amazing misunderstanding of DMOZ. Maybe you need to go away and find out more about the facts of a topic rather than just the urban myths that get repeated in SEO forums before posting about a topic.

About 1000 sites a day get listed in DMOZ - that makes it the fastest growing directory on the www. Thats an awesome achievement.

Oh come Birdie

You know very well that only webmasters care enough to have DMOZ on their submission list.
Joe Public doesn't care about dead for years directory and I bet careless if they are listed in there or not

I personally do not care if DMOZ is shut down. However, I highly doubt DMOZ is going to shut down. They are legend among of the open source directory. A bit disappointed though to the webmaster who really hope to get listed, but in the end of that they got rejected. I don't even bother to submit my website to DMOZ as I know my website is not qualify to take a small place in there yet

I don't see them closing any time soon as they are like legends when it comes to directories.
