It is an additional source of income.

Right now,it is better to launch a niche directory,people really search for directories related with their theme and google likes it too.

I think it's safe to say that the majority of people who start directories hope to monetize it some day. Perhaps they plan to sell backlinks or whatever once their directory is well-established.

Adsense and selling adds is only dream and never will work if your directory is getting only 5 - 10 visitors per day.

Public rarely visit directories. Most directories make money from paid listing. if one can create directories with around PR5, obviously it should not be difficult to make some moeny. But now with google coming down hardly on directories, it would be difficult to get a high PR.

Other than building backlinks, making money is obviously the other reason through adsense and paid listing.

Except making money, directories perform another usefil function - SEO of the sites You are interested in. People create hundreds of directories, cunningly linked together (most oftenly through web-ring). Thus, these directories get high PR and ratings in search engines. Having a hundred of such directories, one may quickly promote his site having at least one "transparent" link displayed on each of these directories.

Trafic is money, but constant, huge trafic is huge money.

Directory owners intentionally delay review process to create an impression that their directories receive thousands of submissions per day :-) and also to tempt users to go for a paid inclusion :-)

Ok, to answer original question, it is all about (hoping) to make money. But I feel this market is overflooded, so it is advisable to stay away from creating new web directories and try to find some other niche.
