Why do people open new directories?

Hi,
I find directory quite usefull to build backlink but I was wonderring what is the motivation behind building up your own directory. What do you get from that?

Before getting any benefits from your directory, you need to build a powerful, interesting, and well designed if you want to be successful.

Benefits could be pure SEO, money from reviews or selling advertisments.

I wish some directories will display banners, but that's another story

Some directories earn money from selling ads, or from charging people when submitting a link (i.e. a paid directory) or you can have bid directories in which the higher the money the higher your link is.

Money is most likely the only motivator. There are already many well established directories and most of them have been hurt by Google cracking down on directories.

Also brand new directories get little traffic and aren't as effective as search engines unless they are niche directories IMO.

Some of the brand new directories are better than the well know web directories..... Better software, more search friendly,cheaper, some of the old webmasters who made previous mistakes making sure it doesn,t happen in the new ones, Back in the old days we use to use 90 key words, and it was a favorites game with pr., now everyone knows pr, is a joke..

... There have been noticable changes through out the yrs., and our new directories are benifitting in the search anyone can buy or make back links in the search or be well known through the yrs., but what really matters is the serp content power of a web directory, because that power is pulling your key words in the search engine. Google doesnt give your website #1 serp, because you landed on lucky 7 in Vegas, But i can get great pr if i know a few good high page pr. sites, and create popularity.
My whole theory is submit to who google and yahoo thinks is the bst. in the key terms you want to do well in, and you can do no wrong.

People build directories in order to earn money through adsense and banners.

People think they can make money with adsense and other ad services on directories but it is almost impossible now a days. Directories are made every day because they are simply easy to make and they bring traffic almost instantly when you announce your directory for free on all the webmaster forums

Long thread to go but in short here is what is needed.

1. Register the domain of choice.

2. Either develop a custom script or use a free available script or buy a script.

3. Bring site live

4. Build some links and advertise the site on forums, blogs etc...

5. Spend some time everyday to activate/deactivate links.

And once the site goes popular, plan about earning from it :p

I have a directory and my only interest is SEO. I think to earn money with it is very difficult.

Well your interest would bring money on its own. You should improve the SERP of the directory. You can monitize it only when you have a strong SERP.

. Just building the directory would not really mean anything unless it ranks

Directories are useful, if the pages of all categories are cached properly by search engines and the links added in categories are with good rankings.

yes and most directories give out links without no follow. Also because of a systematic structure of categories, the link becomes relevant.

Thats why popular directories charge a fee and this is absolutely fair

NOTHING.

People who start new directories would be better off if they spend time maintaining directory to run porno site.

No new directory will ever any make money until it index at least 30,000 -40,000 links and in addition provide something that public would be intersted in.

Adsense and selling adds is only dream and never will work if your directory is getting only 5 - 10 visitors per day.

So, to answer your question: directory or porno site?
which would you choose?

Easy money, set up a directory, Get some Page rank, sell links & listings, SELL it and make a new one.. that is the cycle which is bieng followed these days.
