DMOZ a MUST?

Having your site listed in DMOZ is that important? I think google, yahoo and MSN are the primary ones.

What do you guys think?

I think it is important, being listed in google, yahoo and MSN is different to DMOZ, DMOZ only index quality sites and the search engines know this so if you are indexed with this it helps you in the major search engines!

No its not. >2000 sites a week are added making it the fastest growing directory.

HOWEVER, it is impossible to get listed if your site does not meet the guidelines for the type of site DMOZ lists

DMOZ is very different from Google, Yahoo and MSN. It shouldn't be compared to a Search Engines. It is a Directory. I think you should at least try to submit your site to DMOZ. Who knows, maybe you will be listed.

Your site will be added to DMOZ if you follow their rules in submitting site.

I had a site that had it SERPs improve after a editor removed it from DMOZ

I think DMOZ scrappers can hurt your SERPs

nope. The only sites that get listed are those that meet the listing criteria. You can get listed if you follow the submission rules or not....you possibly get listed quicker if you follow the rules (which most webmasters don't).

Birdie

forget about that and just tell me who's banner is better:
crazyfreeads or my

After all, this topic was created to drop the banner and I don't see any reason why we can't discuss banners instead of DMOZ.

There are 6 Topics, on the same page, below this one where crazyfreeads could find any answer if he want to so... lets talk about banners

Birdie, you are a good source of misinformation.

Let we see what webarchive is telling us:

http://web.archive.org/web/200802142.../www.dmoz.org/

4,582,587 on 14. 02 vs 4,602,811 now, 6 (six) months + later.

Will help you with the calculations; we have net gross of 20 224 sites

Let we divide them on 28 weeks (six months+)
Here is the result - 722.29 weekly or 103.18 daily

Far from ">2000 sites a week " ,and very, very far from "the fastest growing directory"

Please, dont argue, go and calculate

You forgot to factor in all the old sites that have gone 404 that DMOZ deletes.

Aaahhh the age old DMOZ debate

I have two directories listed in DMOZ and it is helpful. More importantly it puts the issue to rest. No longer do I have to stew over not being listed. No longer do I have to wonder if my site was reviewed and didn't cut the mustard. No longer do I have to look through forum after forum for that secret ingredient to getting listed.

My advice after having read thousands of posts and dozens of threads filled with believers and non-believers is just give it your best shot. Submit your site exactly as they ask you to in their guidelines and then forget about it. Really... forget about it. Time here would be better spent adding a post to your blog... or ... gotta run..., bye....

It is easy to see why your Big Guide Web Directory got listed in DMOZ. It is handsome, fast loading, full of interesting content that is well presented, and with well-edited descriptions of the listed sites.

No doubt the DMOZ submission was just as carefully crafted as the 4000 or so descriptions in the Directory.

Well done.

If your site was submitted before Dec 2006 - you can submit it again, we lost a lot of submissions during the "big crash".
