Back when I was doing simple HTML sites, I had about 1/2 a dozen sites hosted on HostOnce. All seemed to be good.
The minute I started working with mySQL/PHP all the sites slowed to a crawl... if they responded at all.
I found a brick wall to yell at since support was horrible getting back to me. When they did, (a week later, usually) the answer was always, "We see nothing wrong"
Also had one instance where email accounts just "disappeared" ... again, they saw nothing wrong.
Six years later, they're still in business. How?

Another vote for 1and1.com. You couldn't believe how unbelieveably BAD! They put me in collection even though I was in CONSTANT communication with them by email. Plus, they bill you months afterward. It's like writing a check, only for the recipient to wait for months before cashing it! THE WORST. Avoid 1and1.com like the plague.

Worst hosting experience? Over 15 years working on sites, I think I have lost track of all the hosts I have tried. I don't want to name names, but essentially you should stick with the known hosting companies. If you go with some no-name host with offers that look too good to be true they usually are.

I'm actually quite surprised that no one has mentioned Fasthosts yet? Nightmare!!!
They had a security breach, decided to reset all ftp, database and mailbox passwords. This isn't too bad when you have 1-2 sites, but when you had 200 websites and more mailboxes like I did, catastrophic.
Avoid like the plague!

Talk about bad hosting experiences..
In a world where everybody can become a web hosting provider over night it's good to know who to avoid!
I have compiled a list of my own 'unpleasant' experiences with hosting companies. It includes dotnetpark, hostmonster, ixwebhosting, webhosting.net, servergrid as some of the ones I would avoid.. See the full list here ( TOP WORST Web Hosting Companies on Linux and Windows)

my worst experience to date was with a company called SEO Wholesale. They went under and didn't say a word to us, their customer; no email notification that our site was going down, no attempt to contact us, nothing. Their tech guy tried to pull it out but the product he was offering was less than what our contract stated and service-wise he couldn't deliver.
One good thing that happened from this bad experience is that we learned how to host our own site.

My worst hosting experience was definately when I bought a $10/year unlimited hosting plan when I was ignorant about hosting companies. The company stopped operating after I had hosting for a month.

Everyone avoid PowWeb.com and their crappy service. Oh, on the surface they appear to be the absolute best webhosting company in the world, but they neglect to mention that their ALL-IN-ONE Unlimited Perfect webhosting package for $4.88/mo has a max database connections limit of only 10 connections. WTF?! You offer unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, unlimited emails, and 75 MySQL databases only to have a max database connections of 10? Good luck getting any amount of traffic to that website. Sounds like false advertising to me.
PLUS, I sent 1000's of referrals to their website as an affiliate and didn't get 1 single commission. POWWEB SUCKS BIG TIME - Powweb hosting review

I am surprised to see some of the major hosting companies listed here. It's horrible when a host doesn't backup their servers and end up not having backups for their members.
