First,You need to transfer the domain name somewhere. And then if you are successful you can transfer web site to your new host.

That's not quite right... You do not "need to transfer the domain name somewhere". Like any other registrar, Yahoo allows you to attach whatever nameservers you want to your domain. That is all you HAVE to do to host the domain elsewhere. See http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/sma...ceddns-12.html for infomation on changing the nameservers for your domain.

I will repeat that I personally won't have another name through Yahoo... but saying that it is required to change the registrar to change hosting is just plain incorrect.

I had the same experience before this where I canceled the web hosting plan but I needed to preserve my domain name. I just gave them a call and after some inquiries I got to know that they had partnership with Melbourne IT. So they sent me an email with certain instructions. After that I can manage my domain at Melbourne IT site. You may want to transfer your domain to another registrar since Melbourne IT charge is quite high.

YOu dont' have to wait till jan. Just issue a transfer request to another registrar. However, you might have to pay the per year charge of $8 or $10 depending on the registrar.
