Web hosting at home?
A webdesigner friend of mine hosts websites from his own house.
I have 2 home servers and at first thought I would like to do itm but I am concerned about uptime and tech support and maybe the cost of a high bandwidth line.
What is your opinion?

Well you named themajor points. You will be limmited to your knowlege in technical support.
Bandwidth is expensive and most internetservice providers BLOCk certain ports used in home servers. Also he line is limmited to the one going into your house which means very slow load times in 99% of the cases. Also in Dc's thre is someone there 100% of the time if a problem arrises if you go away on vacation or even to work theres a high chance of a 8-10hr downtime and even more.

- You need software such as server operating systems, DNS servers, mail servers, database servers, etc. This costs high if you want to setup windows hosting
- You need whitelisted dedicated ip addresses
- You need fast internet connection, at least 10 mbps
- Your customer may be asking for the technical support. You can outsource this, if you do not know much about hosting.,
- Your server should be up 24/7 with the availability of backups by generators or UPSes

You have to live in an area where you can get a high speed connection, depending on how many users/clients you are wanting to serve, isp providers for private households, generally don't offer a connection with high upload speed, which is what you would need. But hey if you can get redundant power supply and a 100mbit connection at home why not Or else just co-locate your server in a data cente nearby.

There is more to it than that. We are webdesigners here and have a lot of websites up now. The server is on 24/7 anyway cos I use it at least in part as a file server and to run multiple virtual machines. Really I am wondering what else it is good for. Some of my students run home websites using free dns services, and I reckon because I have a lot of seo experience I could offer an all in one package and charge premium rates for seo.

I suppose first of all you need to get in touch with your ISP and make sure if that allowed and then estimate the bandwidth and think if your home system will allow you to handle that.

Most ISPs doesnt offer high upload speeds(which is actually the download speed for uses connecting to you) and make it clear in TOS that you can not host sites from your home connection. Apart from this, you need to have back ups, good technical knowledge, licensed hosting softwares, technical qualifications, firewalls etc. to run reliable hosting co. Getting a VPS from a host would be far more easier and economical option.

Your better off colocating servers vs hosting at home. The speed will be terrible for the public.

I think that each end user would need support and personal assistance. Will you or your friend provide that? No..,
So why don't have a look at the reseller accounts. I'm certain that is the best solution for the web designer could be

The reseller hosting is perfect plan for wbedesigners/developers or marketers, you can offer your clients a complete package with hosting included, just go for this if you want to offer hosting as an added feature alongwith your service.

Instead of running the servers directly from your home, I would suggest talking with a datacenter near you about colocating.

There are many points involved in it. High speed internet is utmost necessary as site speed is important factor. Another one is you should have skilled technical support staff who manages client queries.

another point to consider is that your home connection is a single point of failure. If your ISP goes down, none of your client's websites would be available. In cases like this it's always better to colocate your servers or get a reseller account with a provider in a datacenter that has multiple upstream providers, redundant power, etc. It's not that expensive, and you'll save yourself a lot of grief.

Home connection are never advisable. Instead, pay a good hosting provider or a Data Center and stay online 24x7...
