Indeed, and the members can scrutinize any posts that seem fishy. 100 eyeballs tend to be better at spotting things than 2 or 4 that generally manage a reviews site.
They may be independent in the sense that no host owns the site, but the reviews, the uptime, etc. featured there must be taken with a grain (or a lot more) of salt. Hosts are or were given the ability to modify a lot of the info there.
