Sharing a web host/IP with porn sites, websense, etc.

I recently learned that websense thinks my sites are porn because some are hosted on splitinfinty.net which permits porn.

Would paying a bit extra for a dedicated IP solve this problem? If I ahd all my sites on one IP than there wouldn't be any porn sites on that IP, right? Or od I just have to switch hosts to get on a class c ip that has no porn?

are you talking about websense.com ?
It would probably be better to directly ask their support...

i believe websense filters by url/domain, not ip address.

I'd recommend that you contact websense and ask them first.

I wouldn't host your site alongside porn sites, no matter what websense thinks. Porn sites tend to send out spam, and if their IP gets blacklisted, so does yours.

This makes it sound like the dedicated IP is a good idea. Only some other IP would get blacklisted, right?

And I'll take your advice and ask the websense people why they think my Giants blog is porn...

We would also be happy to host your site on a clean IP.

Problem: site is banned for unknown reason.
Response: dedicate time and resources to understand the problem.
Risk: lack of control over what other companies, including the companies that place your site on their blacklists.
Resolution: contact the respective firms to remove your site from the blacklists.
Remaining Risks: Getting blacklisted again.

I agree with John... don't keep the risk of getting banned by using a shared IP.

In the past, hosting was more for a dedicated IP...

Good news is that many hosting packages come with IPs without the added cost...

compaines that use e-mail blacklists would be where you would get caught with the IP blacklist.

If your current host will not change the IP your hosted on to be a 'clean' IP then please look up V7. We would be be able to put your sites on an IP that is dedicated to you and you alone.

James,

Those filtering services are wrong ALOT. They will normally fix the problem if you email them directly.

Also, if you want your own IP, please email si-support@splitinfinity.com and we would be more than happy to make special accomodations for you.

Best regards,
Chris Jester
