Technical specifications of a good host

Say for $500-$1000 a year, what can one get?

Stability/security/avoiding common problems & attacks/speed..
are most important things. We don't want to get embarrassed to our customers, or deal with legal problems.

Like dns settings, ram, memory, how many sites should be hosted on the same server, firewall, OS, backups,..

I will look at various hosts, and compare what they offer.
Is it possible to check if they lie?
Can I get some protection via terms of service or via an insurance?
How can enemies be eliminated? I don't think I have big enemies, but I may have
some jealous competitors.

Partial answers will be appreciated.

I don't think you'd need to spend that much for a shared host. Generally, good shared hosting can be had for $15 - $20 a month. Of course, shared hosting will never be as good as your own dedicated server.

Well, you have been around these forums for a while so you could experience tha quality of V7 Inc offering. With the proposed budget John's joint seems likea safe bet.

However, nobody in their right mind will offer to you any insurance on data. I don't think even Lloyds would do it. If they did you would be paying tons of money for it.

As for the elimination of enemies these guys may have suggestions for you.
