Hosting Issues to Consider for Large Mailman Email List

I am looking at setting up a mailing list of about 500 subscribers with about 150 emails per day going out and need some ideas as to what to look for in a web host.

I am planning on using mailman for the list software.

If anyone is familiar with mailman (or anything comparable) what issues am I going to need to look at?

From what I can find, server load will be an issue and I am pretty sure any type of shared hosting is out. Leaving me with either a Virtual Private Server or a dedicated server. Would I be able to pull this off on a VPS?

I am also wondering about bandwith. Correct me if I am wrong, my math sucks, but it seems with 500 subscribers X 150 emails = 75000 email deliveries per day X 1k per message (an estimate) I need around 7.5 gig bandwidth per day. Which means I am going to need "at least" 225Gb per month in available bandwith. Or am I completely off base on this?

I really don't think disk space will be an issue because I am not going to be archiving the list.

If anyone can give me ideas and steer me on the right course I would appreciate it.

Thank you
Bill

Arrow From a Host

Your calculations are a bit off, I'm afraid. But you're smart to start looking at the issues.

500 subscribers at 150 mails per day is 75,000 mails. 75000 x 1K is 75,000K, or 73.24MB or 0.07GB/day. In 30 days, you would need 2.15GB of bandwidth.

If you're allowed to install MailMan on a host, make sure it has TONS of memory. Our MailMan installation runs very, very high on memory and it has been told that this is a "feature" by the MM dev team.

If you're not up to doing your own installation, find a provider that already sells lists powered by MailMan. We do it but there are others out there, as well.
