Linux-based hosting is definately the most popular. It is usually less expensive than Windows, and often thought to be more stable.

Well, if you use shared hosting, it does not really matter because you cannot really interact with it. When it comes to VPS or a Dedicated Server, then it gets interesting.
As stated before, windows is proprietary software and therefore costs more. Sure, you get ASP.NET, but you can also have that on Linux/Unix with Mono. On the other hand PHP and mySQL also work on windows.
In the end, your budget and your needs determine the OS you will use for hosting.

I think Linux hosting is faster and harder to crack.

Depends on what you need it for..
If you want to host asp pages you have to go with windows
and for php i would suggest linux.
Both can be good but i prefer linux hosting because it is the most common and more stable than windows

hi Reihaan,
i always host my website in linux servers. it's secure, fast, reliable & on top of that it's cheaper than windows servers. you don't have to worry about virus issues in linux servers.
i will always vote for linux.
kindest,
alex

Linux, especially with nginx and PHP over FastCGI Process Manager and HTTPS (with CloudFlare Pro, if I could afford it) is be my preferred setup.

I prefer Linux. I perceive that Linux is more stable and secure and have not had any experiences that would lead to believe otherwise. That being said, I don't believe Windows is not an adequate platform.

Linux is for small business / websites. Windows, only if you want to run asp.net / mssql or anything microsoft. Otherwise, Linux rules shared hosting.

Your sig is gonna show up 4 posts from now, revealing a webhosting company.
Hope you're taking copious notes so you'll learn why folks prefer one over the other. To help in defining the considerations, here's what someone posted in another thread.

There's another thread that'll show some members preferences too. See: Would you choose Windows or Linux Hosting. Anyway, good luck with the quest.

Both , windows and linux webhsoting are best at their places but as far as cost is concerned
linux has slightly advanatage over windows.
Both the webhosting platform has same set of webhosting features and tools. But after all it depends upon price and your,
requirements which platform you prefer to host your website.

It always depend on our requirement. But for a simple website Linux is more than enough and solutions in all part is less as Linux is open source.

It mainly depends on your requirements,
If you want to host PHP and MySQL then Linux VPS. Otherwise If you want dedicated resource to host ASP/ASP.NET and MS SQL/Access then Windows.

Linux is most popular because it is open source.
I currently use for linux hosting. It is usually less expensive than Windows.Windows hosting requires licensing which costs more.so linux hosting is better.

I use Linux hosting. When I was using Frontpage there were some issues related to the database if I used forms. But my hosting service provided good clear explanations and pros & cons of both. Linux meets my needs very well.

if you are just small business groups or individual, there is no need to consider windows hosting, it will cost you more for doing the same effect
