Talking 100% Uptime Hosting Possible?

There are many hosting websites that will claim 99% hosting uptime. I have heard that there are ways to get to 100% hosting in this day and age. Is this possible? I have heard talk of different ways that this could be achieved and wonder if anyone has any info on this.

Well it depends on how you look at it. From my perspective, I get uptime 30 days out of 30 days so that for me is 100% uptime. I don't sit around watching for downtime so it could be different for you.

Yahoo has near 100% uptime. I've only seen it go down once and I was notified beforehand that I could not upload any documents or files.

My website was still visible as they send it around to many places.

Is that the 100% uptime that you are referring?

To get really 100% you've got to deploy lots of servers ... this could be quite costly.
usually, 99.9% is good.

Yahoo Small Business has lots of servers. They promise redundancy and seem to deliver on it.

No server is perfect and will work perfect 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I haven't had a downtime since moving to my new host late last year but then again, i'm not on my site 24 hours a day and there could of been a short downtime. My host did contact me one time about them upgrading PHP but they told me so i expected a downtime and sent out a email to my subscribers about it.

The hosts put up the 99% updtime stat on their site to get business. It's a good selling point. LOL

Most web hosting companies will claim 100% uptime but only a handful of well established web hosting company stand by this policy. This is just a marketing gimmick to attract customers. A lot of them will also claim unlimited bandwidth and space. But when massive traffic starts coming to your website and start using tons of bandwidth your website will likely get shut down. It just really depends on which company you use and the type of hosting package you buy from them. To find the best web hosting for your website just do some research online for a bunch of web hosting companies that attracts you and read the users review. The reviews will give you a better idea about the company you want to host your website on.

I suppose it is technically possible, but the longer the time period you are measuring the more chance that there will be some downtime, even briefly. Even gmail was down for a couple of hours a few years ago. Most companies will eventually suffer some downtime, just make sure that the one you choose has a Service Level Agreement that offers you compensation if it happens.

If the hosting server has been long enough in the industry, having 100% uptime is almost close to impossible. But achieving high level of uptime, e.g. 99.9% is already pretty good.

Not really. Your site is still being held on a computer. One that is made up of many little bits and pieces that can break. If something breaks, or someone uses the wrong codes while creating updates, or the server suddenly looses its internet connection etc. you're going to have downtimes.

And what if they have two servers and cache your site?

Would be good because if one goes down, you could still access the site. I use a similar setup for work. Cloud based about 7 servers, with everything saved to said servers, so if one goes down, you're not left in the dark.

I totally agree with nks's suggestion. Web hosting that have been around with good reputation should not give you any problem when it comes to your websites uptime

Yahoo Small Business offers multi-redundancy servers. The only downtime in almost two years that I've been with them was a pre-planned downtime whereby I couldn't upload to the server. But my website was accessible by the public.

I think 99.99% uptime is a more trustworthy figure.

When a web hosting company that provides 99% server uptime then it is almost trustworthy and reliable one. There are some certain web host that even guaranty to provide 100% uptime. but it appears that those are very costly one compared to other web hosts.

A 100% uptime is not possible. You can try to reach it but hosts need to pay a lot of money for it. High end servers, 24/7 monitoring, etc.
