I know my HG server had a scheduled upgrade last week and was down for 20 minutes or so. But, generally the up time is pretty good, well within their %99 guarantee.

I agree. I moved to hostgator as well, and so far everything has been better than my previous host. I have had very little downtimes of which to speak.

Don't use such services for continuous monitoring. It's ok to use it for 1 or 2 week with moderate frequency to test the server but only if the official tool is not available. After that you should stop using such service. Because such services put unnecessary load on server.

BTW, hostgator is very reliable. I am using them.

For any large hosting company it can be pretty hit and miss. When I checked today Hostgator actually owns about 29,184 other domains, and is associated with 137,110 domains. That's a total of 166,294.

The important statistic is not how many domains they own, but how many domains are hosted on their servers. When I checked that today the figure came out at 38,633 on each of their four servers.

It only takes one person abusing a server to screw things up for everyone else on that server, so with four servers it's quite possible for three quarters of users to be having good service at the same time as a quarter of users are having terrible service.

When considering hosting companies, the reliable ones will strictly limit the number of users per server, and when they reach that limit they will invest in additional servers not simply add more users to the ones that are already fully used.

I have read a lot of positive as well as negative reviews of them.
Think only personal experience is the best thing to get to know how reliable they are in reality.

Lots of others have already said the same, but HG is very reliable in my experience. Great customer service too-- I have no problem getting a live person very quickly, and they always seem to know what they're talking about which has not been my experience with other companies!

Once I also faced a little down time and I talked to the support and they gave me one month free hosting. I was using there reseller package. Now I am using VPS and not only me but my customers are very happy with the service. The best thing about them is that they are always there for you.

The big name hosts are not reliable in general. They have outgrown their threshold limitations which makes it difficult for them to contain issues. They just throw money at the situation now and that is never the solution.

I am not agreed with you, The big companies might grow big by throwing the money but sustaining the top positions and staying big can not be achieved with out being responsible and excellent in your respective fields

I don't think you have anything to worry about but if you find that it's down for 20 minutes once a week again contact them and find out what's up.
