It depends what you want to run on it. If it's just static html pages then any would do. If you need to run scripts (PHP/Perl) then you'll have to shop around for good ones. I'd say the following is good:
- php / perl / etc scripts enabled
- ftp
- enough space for your need/bandwidth
- good service *
- control panels (cPanel for example)
* Why good service? Nothing beats good service when you need a function enabled for your website.
I recommend findmyhosting. You can compare web hosts on it.
If you want more sophisticated ones, and more professional ones, try mediatemple.

Its difficult to get a reliable free hosting and I think its better to go for paid hosting bcoz you get what you pay for.

Remember check the QoS
Hi:
Remember also to check the quality of the service; if have downtime, how good is the technical support assistance ... look out there if are unsatisfied clients and why ... never get a decition based on low prices only.
Regards

I think you should plan to go with paid hosts, majority of paid hosting companies support programming languages such as PHP, ASP, CGI/Perl, Coldfusion and JSP. Most Paid hosts also offer 24/7 support.

What type of hosting do you want shared or dedicated, this will make a difference in the price and the features you will get. Also, depends what you are willing to pay for. What type of site or sites do you have? If you have heavy databases or a site that uses bandwidth, these are factors to consider.

There are probably free hosts with fairly reliable hosting but they're very scarce.
The best way to find out a good web host is through lots of research and if possible try some hosts that offer trial periods (although these days you have to be careful about this, some hosts pay more attention on trial accounts so they are more likely to join).

It's true that you pay for what you get.
Whilst free hosting won't be reliable (and probably full of banners!) paying the high end of the hosting price bracket doesn't mean that the company will provide a top, professional service.
I was using the UK's No.1 hosting company, or so they say they are - okay there a big hosting company in the UK, and they sucked - still suck, and I moved to a small hosting company, with great support and very little downtime.

I think I may have to take your approach and find a small thing that I trust, after all it's not like hosting is as crucial to get right first time as domain registration is. Fortunately I've found a great registrar.
V7n Inc hosting interests me, maybe by the way they've rated themselves top in their own hosting reviews , anyway where can I find a pricing/features summary? And a crucial question is: what are the payment options? I can pay by wire transfer or cash deposit only. No credit card, debit card or validated paypal.

i hate it when u get all these strike-through prices with new prices underneath them. i just want something honest and upfront, cheap and well-featured (and they must accommodate my preferred payment mechanisms).
